which shops have Embrocation?

Mike Rosenfeld

Boy was I wrong about this...I thought people just used it so their
leg muscles would glisten and shine in the winter sun. Make it easier to
see the big guns in the low light while you ride past reflective surfaces.
You know what I am talking about....on any given ride you have two or three
spots that give you that position and kit check....make sure the white shoe
covers aren't too dirty. Not that I would know anything about this.

I can see that balm really has its uses from keeping you warm to providing
hours of entertainment at the expense of others... and to think that I
thought sweat pants over my shorts would be enough.

Have fun in the cold at Nats everyone.

Well there pardners, over here on the cold side of the hills we just put
on some more clothes fer winter time. I 'spose if ya'll be wantn'
somethin' to make yer skin feel hot when in fact yer actually gettin'
colder that's yer choice. Heck, we could even arrange somethin' fer
y'all come nationals time. We could oblige ya some pepper spray, that'll
make ya feel warm all over! Hows about we set up a couple places y'all
could pull in, one fer a little warm up with the "Bear-Be-Gone"
strength. For t'other we could use the "Dangerous Felon" variety. If'n I
was a bettin' man I'd say we'd be sure to have some volunteers to hep
y'all out!
But I 'spect y'all is better off just wearin' plain old clothes. 'Sides,
folks 'round these parts tend to look at y'all funny when youse be
smelling like to two dollar whore. But that's just one fellas 'pinion,
a'course.

Atomic Balm was banned by most countries with the exception of a few
old Soviet republics in Central Asia as it was too often used as a
prank substitute for chamois cream. Although, if you call your old
high school football coach he might have some in an old equipment bag.

I guess I was personally curious about this stuff, so checked on Google.
Here's a good summary from twowheelblogs.com. Basically it increases
circulation and makes you feel warm, and your muscles feel "warmed up" and
ready for action, but you are still losing body heat so be careful:

"How does it work? Well if you look at the ingredients in many common
cycling embrocations you will tend to find capsicum (the stuff that makes
peppers hot), menthol, or other odd ingredients that would seem to provide a
burning sensation. As I understand things, these ingredients when rubbed
into the skin, stimulate the nerves and in turn more blood flows to the area
(instead of nature’s first reaction to cold which is to constrict vessels in
the extremities to keep the core warm).

Now before anyone gets any bright ideas, allow me to point out an obvious
danger. This stuff will not actually make you warm! It only redirects blood
flow to the areas where it is applied. This is not a big deal if you are
generating a fair amount of additional heat through vigorous activities, but
if you are sedentary in the cold weather this stuff will act to lower your
core temperature. You can get a similar effect by drinking alcohol (booze
dilates blood vessels and allows blood to flow to your extremities and your
hands will feel warmer at the cost of your vital organs which cool as the
cool blood returns to your core…can lead to hypothermia which is bad!). For
most cyclists our core gets plenty warm, but the legs often feel “dead” in
the cold weather (probably because of this vascular restriction reducing
blood flow)."

On a serious note. I first started using embrocation the first year I raced Cyclocross... when it started getting cold. The 50+ group raced at 9 AM and this old body needed that jump start. I think it really does help my body function more efficiently. I have to admit I have ridden many more miles without embrocation in worse weather (when touring) than any of my cyclocross or mountain bike races and survived. But I like the stuff! I would assume most of them work pretty much the same. Kind of like a mouse trap. For you science people out there... you could chime in... I expect it is all chemistry right? It is just another method of providing heat than a) warming up the muscles by spinning or b) wearing leg warmers etc.

Apparently, knee warmers and anything else below the knee except shoes and socks are illegal for UCI sanctioned races. Perhaps one could get away with very long socks.

Will-    River City Bicycles had plenty of Mad Alchemy embrocation the last time I was in there.... (both mild and medium)

I use the medium and like it a lot -although I wish I could find some of their hot (aka "Madness"). It doesn't feel scorchingly hot, but my legs never feel cold even on wet freezing race days.

Like most real embrocation, it is not easy to remove (although easier than most!)

It depends on what you use. You can pick up big cans of "Tiger Balm" which
I have used for years at the Vitamin Shop downtown. Dot usually does this

gets warmer as you get warmed up. They will probably have some at the Cyclo

I can usually rely on my baby-fat to get me through the cold season but USGP is looking to be uber cold and very dry.
