Maybe he's referring to windchill index. See National Weather Service link

40 below won't happen, been here 15 years and have only ever
experienced 20 below. And remember it's a dry cold!

;-)

This link is typically as accurate as forecasts ever get over here:

Here's some weather cams:

Every revolutionary idea seems to evoke three stages of reaction...
One, it's completely impossible.
Two, it's possible, but it's not worth doing.
Three, I said it was a good idea all along.

Anyway this is a good site to see
to the minute stuff around town. That west ridge one is probably the
closest to the race although it probably is a couple hundred feet
higher.

Re: [OBRA Chat] snow in bend

I haven't been past the course since the snows flew,
but the shallow spots in my yard (on the west side near Shevlin Park)
are 8 inches deep, with drifts (there was a lot of wind  transport
during the storm) over knee deep in depressions and corners of the yard.

The dirt below is generally soft.  It could make for a
fast frozen course if the snow is cleared, or it could make for mud
holes and frozen ruts if it thaws and refreezes.

It's Bend, there is no way to tell.  The storm wasn't
expected to drop more than a bit of dust, an inch max...  heck, Mt B
only got one inch out of it (from one end of town to the other, the
range is 4 to 14 inches).

If it ended up being 60 degrees this weekend, I'd be
surprised, but the cascades do funny things (my internal almanac says
this winters snows are 3 weeks early).

Be prepared for EVERYTHING!  That said, Friday's temps
should be around freezing, and there is the possibility of more snow
this weekend....

Cheers, Mike.

PS, if there is someone that is totally hosed with
regards to a place to stay, I may be able to put up a rider or 2 (spare
room with a queen bed), but I have to warn you that we have 2 young
kids, and a chaotic life which isn't ideal for someone that is serious
about competing.

Kind of reminds me of Nationals a few years ago in
Rhode Island. I just doubt that there is an overnight blizzard to deal
with, but you never know.

I can say that the ground can change from race to race as it warms. One
corner can be iffy one race and great the next. Gotta love cross and
how things change so fast on course.

Looks
like about 6-8 inches of fluffy light stuff. There's no more coming

but this stuff is not going to melt. I think they will sweep the snow
off

the course but you might want to bring your trainer for workouts.

scroll down to the bottom and look through the weather stations, one is at -40 another at -30

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=bend,or&wuSelect=WEATHER

Anyway this is a good site to see to the minute stuff around town. That west ridge one is probably the closest to the race although it probably is a couple hundred feet higher.

I haven't been past the course since the snows flew, but the shallow spots in my yard (on the west side near Shevlin Park) are 8 inches deep, with drifts (there was a lot of wind transport during the storm) over knee deep in depressions and corners of the yard.

The dirt below is generally soft. It could make for a fast frozen course if the snow is cleared, or it could make for mud holes and frozen ruts if it thaws and refreezes.

It's Bend, there is no way to tell. The storm wasn't expected to drop more than a bit of dust, an inch max... heck, Mt B only got one inch out of it (from one end of town to the other, the range is 4 to 14 inches).

If it ended up being 60 degrees this weekend, I'd be surprised, but the cascades do funny things (my internal almanac says this winters snows are 3 weeks early).

Be prepared for EVERYTHING! That said, Friday's temps should be around freezing, and there is the possibility of more snow this weekend....

Cheers, Mike.

PS, if there is someone that is totally hosed with regards to a place to stay, I may be able to put up a rider or 2 (spare room with a queen bed), but I have to warn you that we have 2 young kids, and a chaotic life which isn't ideal for someone that is serious about competing.

Kind of reminds me of Nationals a few years ago in Rhode Island. I just doubt that there is an overnight blizzard to deal with, but you never know.

I can say that the ground can change from race to race as it warms. One corner can be iffy one race and great the next. Gotta love cross and how things change so fast on course.

Either way will be the same for all racers... but... if it melts some (which it may not... but sunshine even in cold weather can cause some melting) then re-freezes; the 6-8" of snow can be very different than an area that is swept. An inch of ice on top of a few inches of snow will be very different than packed down inch or two. Both offer challenges. If it is dry snow and there is some wind, it may self-sweep and drift some. Whatever they do with the course should be just fine. I am looking forward to cold temps and trying to stay vertical. A big thanks to all the folks in Bend helping make this happen and to Ross and crew for their pro input. We are fortunate to be able to participate in this event here at home.

they might sweep it off the course? SWEEP IT OFF THE COURSE?!??!

this is cyclocross, not baseball. let the snow lie!

Looks like about 6-8 inches of fluffy light stuff. There's no more coming
but this stuff is not going to melt. I think they will sweep the snow off
the course but you might want to bring your trainer for workouts.
