Old School Cyclocross Sunriver 1976

Joel Metz

count me in for a retro race. those of you newer cross types who dismount,
then pass your right foot between your left leg and frame (assuming
left-side dismount) would probably do fine with toeclips. expect endos
from the plant-right-foot-outside-left-leg crowd :) once you have it down,
you can actually dismount pretty damn fast in toeclips.

Wow, I never knew Phil had filmed that event. Doug Heard(RIP) and I rode in the Junior race (not very well as you can see in the results). We had absolutely no idea what to do. There had been 1 race prior for Districts....the entire extent of our cross knowledge. We pretty much just showed up and rode.

I hadn't been doing much training since the road season was over. It was WAY more difficult than I ever expected. I do remember that downhill. It was rough as hell and had a sharp turn at the bottom that I bit it on several times.

To see how popular cyclocross is in Oregon these days is just amazing. That 1976 race was pure "amateur hour".

Thanks for posting that Andy.

Gary Watts

P.S. I was always very jealous of your US National Championship Road jersey:-)

Thanks Andy,

I enjoyed the fact that those guys were rocking it WITHOUT carbon bikes carbon wheels index shifting clipless pedals internal cables etc etc etc. Makes me nostalgic for real bike riders especially after the shameful "elite" bike handling displayed at USGP last weekend...

Oh well, some things never change as we saw all but one rider dismounting at the very first sign of an uphill!

Maybe someday we can have a retro category (hint hint)...

Cheers for the good ole days!

Hey OBRA land,
As some of you may know this year is not the first time
That the Bend area has hosted the US National Cyclocross Championships.
Back in 1976 the event was held in Sunriver OR.
Back in the day Phil Sanders filmed most of the events.
They only had Senior Women's, Junior Men's and
Senior Men's races. I have posted on youtube a video for those interested in seeing old school Cyclocross.
They only had road bikes for CCX back then but managed to get the job done none the less.
The races in Sunriver had no mud to contend with, but lots of central Oregon moon dust.
The first US National Cyclocross Championship was held in 1975 in Berkley CA, so Sunriver is the second one.
A guy named Laurence Malone won the Senior Mens title four years in a row 1975-1979, a feat not repeated, I don't believe.
Unfortunately there is not much footage of the Women's race, only the awards presentation portion.
Also, the video quality degraded quite a bit on the upload to youtube, but it is still watch able.
