The local road conditions are generally fair. They range from clear
pavement on the most traveled routes (the Parkway, 3rd street,
Greenwood, etc) to packed snow on the side streets. The most significant
area of concern is intersections where cars stop and start - it packs
and then polishes the snow to a nice icy hard surface. Use exceptional
caution when approaching intersections where the road appears to have a
glassy surface. Also note that when you leave a main route (such as the
Parkway) the road condition may change rapidly on the exit or turn.
Some areas are treated with de-icer but the most common method is to
spread cinders (crushed pumice). The cinders help with the traction if
the surface is soft enough so that they embed, if not they quickly get
brushed off and it back to icy again. At the moment most people are not
using chains but you should have them with you. Chain requirements will
no doubt be in effect for the drive over the mountains anyway.

Those visiting are encouraged to make sure your windshield washer fluid
is a sub-freezing variety and to lubricate your door locks to prevent
them from freezing you out of your vehicle. A cool trick if that happens
is to heat your key with a cigarette lighter before putting it in the lock.

Enjoy your visit!

I've seen all the emails about the weather conditions and temperature,
but what about the road conditions? Those of us from Portland are
familiar with poor winter road maintenance, especially last year during
our "snow-pocalypse". How does Bend handle snow/ice on roads? Are the
side roads clear, or will I need chains to get around town? TripCheck
covers the highways, but doesn't really mention city streets. Any
insight will help.

Thanks,
