During the Clydes race I witnessed at least two people (one of them is well known person in the Portland racing scene) spraying beer all over the racers (I bet he wasn't using his team sponsor's beer). He was over heard bragging that he went through a case of beer just spraying them on the racers, just ask the person who was leading for most of the clyde's race. I also saw one of the racers go down just after being sprayed, coincidence ??

I do not think anyone needs to speak to this small minute thing that
happened anymore. BY FAR THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE EVENTS AND BEHAVIOR
DURING THE FOUR WONDERFUL DAYS OF RACING WERE GOOD TO GREAT! Lets move on
to skiing, the last cross race in Eugene, riding trainers because it is
raining, the worst day of the year ride and winter mountain bike rides.
Jack Frost, Banana Belt and Red to Red will be here before we know it.

It doesn't matter. Clydes actually absorb beer sprayed on them. It makes
them stronger. Kind of like when you spray a gremlin with water, except
they don't multiply (immediately).

In the midst of rushing to conclusions about an internet rumor over beer
throwing perhaps some missed a real story. So at how many other venues
could a racer loose a bike off the back of his car in the middle of the
night and have it returned the next day?

Why not talk about something positive for a change?

As a p.s., I test rode a Focus bike around for two laps before the Elite
women today and let me tell you, the course was still alternately wet and
frozen and you really couldn't tell sometimes which was which but yes Ron,an
absolutely brillant layout. Where the pavement transistion is before the
off -camber hill it has a big lip with black ice because it's in the shade
and both laps at least one girl went down even with a guy telling you to
beware of it. That had to hurt on a pre-ride. And sadly Matt, I found myself
behind the dudes with the capes, who I'll call Cape Fear forever more,
because they were far too cautious around far too many turns and I couldn't
shake 'em. I didn't see what happened firsthand to Aaron but I know he was
there to race.----- Original Message -----

The beer discussion in the live report is in regards to the Clydsdale event the night before.

10:40
Ted CX Magazine: Last night was the Deschutes Brewery party and Clydesdale race. Huge crowds, costumes, and a full marching band were present.
10:40
Josh: Rotem Ishay's result could do double duty as Israeli national CX champ. He races out of Ft Lewis College, Durango under coach Matt Shriver's tutelage.
10:40
Ted CX Magazine: Spectators were throwing beer at riders...
10:40
Ted CX Magazine: Not just the liquid...full cans! Got to be tough to race with the big boys.

Justin Serna

FYI. . . the young men that are responsible for the beer showers are not from Oregon in fact they are all up and coming elite racers. The leader of the group is a newly signed pro!

and, of course, everyone, way to assume it was an oregon spectator
throwing beers, or that a live internet report is an accurate
representation of whats really happening beyond the racing itself. im not
there right now, and for all i know, all that could have been seen was one
non-oregon spectator throwing a single empty beer can - or, yes, it could
have been all the oregon spectators throwing legions of full beer cans -
or, perhaps, anything in between those two extremes. ill take the report
from my friends when they get back over potential hyperbole or
rumor-spreading on the part of a race reporter. while i was there the
first 2 days, i saw nothing of this sort.

i realize that this kind of thing is what sculpts public opinion, and that
we are held responsible (justifiably or not) for the behavior of
spectators in our domain, but - accurate or not, way to take the bait,
people. never underestimate the internets potential to blow a single
isolated event out of proportion.
