Ron and Dorothy Strasser
Brian,
The relationship with NWTA is a work in progress and the Board will be working on that relationship at the next meeting from what I understand. I personally expect the relationship to get better, but these things take time. We old people know the value of patience. It usually works in your favor and also keeps your blood pressure lower.
I say go out and ride with someone who knows the area and do not expect to be able to do it all in one day unless you have several hours and are in pretty good shape. My favorite times out there are spring and fall. I tend to not ride in the fall however as I am doing Cyclocross. I may go out and ride late next month on a Sunday... not at night.
I urge obra members in the metro area to join NWTA. Go to the website and look as some of the things taking place. We have become the first IMBA chapter in the NW and have been working with IMBA on several projects... the one I want to try next spring is the new trail East of Sandy on BLM land... somewhere out around Wendell's on hwy 26. Sounds like a great trail up or down and it is being connected to another big loop trail. Joining doesn't mean you need to donate tons of time, but you are making it an organization that can do more for all us riders. We can make this area way better for off road riding, but we need to show landowners, agencies and politicians we are an organized and positive force in it for the long haul. This is exactly where the new members of the board are committed to taking NWTA. Oh yeah. I am not a board member.

Hey all,
I've not yet been out to Scappose to ride on the trails. I hope they don't wind up getting shut down before I can get out there.
Unfortunately I think most of the "trail poachers" don't belong to OBRA or NWTA and thus don't get these messages. They'd probably still go out there even if trail access was closed.
However, I don't know the full story behind access to the land. Have the landowners been engaged by the NWTA or OBRA in any formal way? It seems that Ron posts regularly to the OBRA list about how the landowners are always so close to closing access to the trails. Hasn't Ron done some trail work out there? (Or am I thinking of another place?) This near-constant state of anxiety over trail access, is, quite frankly, a little irritating.
Does anybody know where I can find out more-- some source for all the facts and details?
Ron himself, maybe? :)
Cheers,
Brian J.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] night riding scappoose
Please don't ride out there after dark.
I just received an email from an OBRA rider. Yesterday this rider and a buddy were starting a ride out there about 3:30 PM. They were at the gate when a State Trooper stopped and informed them about the rule regarding no entry (including riding) at night. The Trooper also informed these two riders that the Landowner was getting close to SHUTTING DOWN THE AREA TO MOUNTAIN BIKING if people continue to ride after dark.
I see this as a perfect example of where people who make the individual choice to ride after dark could easily end our access of a close place to ride our bikes. I have to hope that most people with the knowledge of the situation will choose not to ride after dark. Please let anyone you know who has, enjoys, or you think will want to do so in the future know what their riding at night there could do to so many other people. Ask them to please not ride after dark out there.
