there really is no fix... this is why they redesigned with the metal plate.
you could try to fab something yourself, but it wouldn't be worth the
time..
at least all of them now ( time, shimano spdsl, look keo, mavic avenir ),
have a cleat where one doesn't walk on and wear out the interface surface.
The plastic cleat is still a pain to walk far in... but won't mare or ruin
floors.. I still mainly ride with eggbeaters.. anyway, i started using the
new mavic pedals.. very nice. basically shimano quality, works as well, is
simple and nice, inexpensive. I noticed the sleeve bearing in these (in the
inexpensive models, needle?in the better models.. ), are quite unlike say
eggbeater sleeve bearings, they seem to roll/spin really nice. Actually
thought they were roller bearings until i took them apart and looked. Their
"plastic" friction interface-with-the-cleat plate has more area then old
spd-sl, and pops out for replacing, although i have not seen anyone yet
selling the replacement plate...
