Swan Island Crit: A Junior Perspective
Are more Junior Women racing in Oregon? It sure looks that way. Last year'
s Swan Island Crit results shows three junior Women, this year 9 of the 27
juniors racing were women. Junior men numbers climbed from 16 to18.
Marty Cahill (Corben Huntair) again won the 15-18 Jr. Men with Kevin Selker
(EWEB/Windpower) in second place and third place Taylor Kneuver (BBC),
followed by Team Oregon juniors Ricky Bossen and Josh Woolcock.
In a field of thirteen 11-14 Jr. Men, Kenny Bossen (Team Oregon) snatched
first place, followed by Malachi Byrd (Cyclisme) and Keith Beckman (BBC) in
third place. He was followed closely by Jacob Chilenski (Team Oregon) who,
despite Keith's best efforts, drafted his wheel the entire race.
Catelyn Gibbs (BBC) and Rachelle Hobson (TeamO) were the only returning
junior women. Adding to the junior women ranks this year were Katelyn
Luhnow (Velo/Bike&Hike), unattached Hailey Zilla and Team Oregon juniors
Angela Thornton, Patty Roper, Ellie Bossen, and Kayla Woolcock.
These young women raced on everything from nice bikes to heavy older bikes,
even a mountain bike with nobbies. They all seemed to have a good time.
After their race a gaggle of these girls and younger siblings collected
under an canopy of interlaced umbrellas to chat and watch the adult races.
(I'll post pictures when I can) Later several of these young women were
helping younger siblings line up for the kids races.
The kid's races this year were an even bigger hit than last year.
Twenty-three 4-6 year olds brought many kinds of bikes and trikes to line.
This race was so well attended that it will likely need to be split into two
groupings next year (with and without training wheels). Twenty 7-8
year-olds lined their bikes up for their 2 lap race. Seven boys and girls
ages 9-11 raced a good race and are looking forward to racing the longer
junior race next year.
Today's turnout shows, if you schedule races for them, they will come.
