Kenji and other instructors...
I think this instruction session was very positive. I know how insecure I
was when I went to my first cyclocross race. I only had a vague idea of what
to expect. Unless you know someone who has given you some prior knowledge
about racing, you don't know squat. The instruction you provided, plus
making the new riders feel welcome is HUGE! Even though I do not race on
the road, I personally thank you for doing this workshop. New OBRA members
and energy will be the result.

A big thank you to Chris Swan, Brian Forbes, Steve Yenne, Omer Kem,
Alpenrose Dairy and Pringle Creek Development for their help with the
clinics on Sunday.

With perfect weather in the valley, the training down in Salem was a
big success. 15 riders showed up, ready to ride and learn. It was a
great mix of riders from new to those with some experience racing.

We ran through a lot of drills that included:

straight line riding
bike handling/bike awareness
hydrating
looking around without veering
cornering

We even had the group ride around a crit type course which got the
students comfortable riding next to other people around corners.

Next, the group rode on the Fairview Circuit race course where they
were taught how to paceline, how to get out of the saddle without
dropping back on hills and other great group riding skills. After
coming back, they were taught a more advanced skill of how to grab
bottles in a feedzone.

To cap off the day, the riders learned how it feels to be bumped and
to rub wheels. While they were instructed to avoid those situations,
they learned how not to panic if it happens.

It was great having such experienced riders as Steve and Omer as they
were able to provide great feedback to students. The Pringle Creek
development was also the perfect location. Thanks to all who showed
up!

As a side note... to help out those new to racing we are starting to
highlight beginner friendly races on the OBRA site. I will also try
to work with people in various regions to try to get more rider
clinics on a more regular basis.
