Jeff,
Attached is a drawing I did a while back to build several sets of bike
stands we have used for about 5 years for producing events. They work
perfectly, are easily constructed, and relatively inexpensive to
build. Average cost is around $25 to $30 in materials per stand.
Price comes down a little bit if you buy the plywood for the triangles
(see the drawing) in a large sheet.
If you have (or a budy has) a few basic wood working tools:
drill and drill bits
skil saw and/or chop box and/or table saw
(heck a hand saw would work fine - the triangles might be harder to
cut
neatly with a hand saw ... but hey!)
They can be easily built. We use several of these screwed together
with an iron Union in between each stand section. Ten foot 3/4 iron
pipe will support about 8 to 10 bikes per section (on alternating sides
of the stand) without any problems. The 92 5/8" standard length 2x4s
make for the perfect height (about 44" from ground") for the pipe
section - even big bikes like mine (size XL frame for a 6'3" person)
fits easily on this stand.
Let me know if you have any questions... I'm happy to help. I've
built a couple dozen stand leg sets.
