2010 Fuji Banana Belt Prize List

Erik Long

2010-02-27

I agree with Ted. I still don't understand why it is that I need to be given a prize of any kind for 3rd place in my age group. Most of us are out here racing for the fun of it and I know that if I win at the age-group level, bragging rights are all the prize I need.

Elite racing is quite a different story, however. When you're shooting for the podium in a Pro/1/2 race, Cyclocross A's, and/or Open/PRO Mountainbike race or the highest level of any athletic event, you are also making monumental sacrifices to take that shot. The people who have success at that level and above are giving up income and hours out of their lives that can exceed the commitment of a full-time job and that is worthy of compensation.

Give the high-caliber competitors a decent prize list.

But are prizes why we come out and race? I love that local bike shops etc. that do this, I have donated alot of products to local races and never gotten any business from it....But really don't expect to....but is this why we come to race??? no matter what cats???? I don't think so....I think people just want to race their bikes....

A lot of people are commenting about the prizes and discussing where prizes and incentives should be targeted. Also more discussion of the cat 123 dilemma. Maybe incentives in cat 3 field will help grow the 12 fields. Investing in the pipeline to grow local talent. Regardless, I will never win a bike or a prize from racing. What I have won is more subtle... A great local bike shop that cares about cycling in my community and a good friend. Olson's rules! And I love my sweet Fuji. Thanks Mike.

As a cat 3 racer who does not yet have enough points to upgrade to 2's, I
want to put in my two bits about this.

I have recently felt sad about the lack of interest from many of the 1/2
women's riders in racing in the 1/2/3 category when it is provided by
promoters. As women's racing is still a developing sport, I feel that women
should make the effort to take advantage of racing oppurtunities provided by
promoters, and feel that when women choose not to participate in the race
provided and instead race in a different category; such as many did in
Cherry Pie and Sublimity, that they give up the priveledge to complain about
lack of prizes..etc provided for other races. This is because the lack of
support/riders in the 1/2's category corrolates to the lack of prizes and
support for women's 1/2 races.

Thanks again to all those who support women's racing and work to promote it
!

Sincerely,

Leia Tyrrell

My wife who is a 2 wonders the same thing. She has even contemplated downgrading so she won't have to race with men. What I find funny is that the reason there is only one race with 1,2's is because the 3's women have complained that the 1,2's win the races. But I am pretty sure a 3 won cherry pie and sublimity. So there goes that argument.

What about the women's 1/2 field!?

I'm new to the area and am a cat 1 and I see that the women's cat 3 may win
a bike? That's a super large prize!
But see no prize for women 1/2?
