My second ever stage race was the perfect blend of fun, torture, legendary conditions, beautiful courses, friendly locals, stiff competition, selfless volunteers... All I had to do was eat, sleep, and race; that's my version of a perfect life for three days.
Special thanks:
Nathan - This was tremendously well organized, many conversations amongst the racers about how it felt more like a mature event, no one could believe this was the first year. You must be an incredibly persuasive person to have coordinated so much and have it work seamlessly (at least from a racer's perspective) Apologizing for the weather is taking a bit too much responsibility, but thanks.
Officials and volunteers - Long hours, rough conditions. At least riding a bike will keep you warm; I saw a lot of people shivering out there. I saw Candi pinning up results Sunday morning and she looked more tired than any racer. Geri practically threw herself in front of a truck to keep me safe during the time trial. Splinter made me laugh during the crit: "winner of the lap gets some Baker City GOLD!" All the people working the feeds, corner marshals, everyone behind the scenes - amazing.
Baker City - Incredibly warm friendly people. Every local I met was interested and encouraging, vehicle traffic in town was amazingly polite, the local bike shop had an obscure part I needed to be able to go on racing, home made cookies, cheering fans, really nice high school principal. Can't wait to see them next year, or sooner.
Sponsors - You made a lot of racers happy, they're going to tell all their friends.
Fellow racers - Thanks for the quality competition.
Is there a list of addresses to send notes of appreciation to?
Cheers,
Peter Drake
