First of all, congrats on the little one about to come
into the world.
Second, go find some old road bike like a Peugot, Schwinn,
something like that with 10 speeds. Just pop off the freewheel,
deraileurs, get a BMX chain (really cheap) and a cog. Voila,
fixed gear. You don't need anything fancy, and you definately
should have brakes for the commute.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Fixed Gear needed
Greetings!
I am looking to get ahold of a fixed gear bike to ride for a few
months. I am going to be a dad any day now and can't spend the cabbage on
another bike. With the arrival of our wee one I will have little time to
ride and I figured I would bike commute to work instead of taking the bus!
If anyone has a fixed gear laying around that they don't use
perhaps we can
work out a monthly rental or something. Also..if you have one that needs
some work I can get the parts, get it running and you have a
working bike in
a month or two when I am finished with it. I ride a 56cm frame at the
moment.
Thanks!
Keith
