Anyone ridden the Hwy 224 scenic byway?

Have not ridden 224 all the way to Detroit, but I rode Estacada -> Timothy Lk
last year.  224 is fantastic up to Three Lynx with a wide shoulder along the
river.  Much narrower road past the Ripplebrook guard station but traffic is
usually pretty light so it's not bad (holidays a different story).  Absolutely
gorgeous.  Only two caveats: 1) on the 224->Timothy Lk road, the last 6 miles or
so are gravel, it's like 2-4" loose rock that you just plain will not be riding
on with most road bikes, and little shoulder to walk on.  And, 2) there are some
"interesting" characters at times, particularly as you get up toward the hot
springs.  I was not hassled but didn't feel totally comfortable riding it alone.

Cell service dropped off for me somewhere just above Promontory Park (T-Mobile).

I've ridden Santiam before.  No bike lane but a pretty good shoulder for much of
it.
Cheers,
-jeff

I haven't ridden it since the part from Timothy Lake to Ripplebrook
washed out several years ago... but providing that piece is back in
service... it's a great ride. On the Clackamas river road, watch out
for the first cranker on the descent to Breitenbush. From Detroit to
Mackenzie Bridge there can be a lot of traffic, but the shoulder is
generally OK... and if you can pick the time and day the traffic can
be fairly light. But, if you're going to Mackenzie Bridge... go a bit
further down river to the Aufterheide Hwy to Oakridge. It's another
fantastic ride, albeit a long one... Mapquest says 182 miles from
Timberline to Oakridge.

That is an amazing stretch of road. We have already done recon work in
anticipation of running a stage of the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic that
starts at Detriot lake and ends at Timberline Lodge. Car counts are
generally a vehicle every 45 minutes on average on the upper sections of
224 and the Forest Service Roads between 224 and Detriot Lake. No
shoulders on that stretch but graet shoulders from Detriot Lake back to
Salem.
Amazing roads that are incredibly scenic. A must do ride.

Mostly I'm interested in feedback on the section from Estacada to
Detroit Lake in terms of road surface, and how safe it is/isn't for
cyclists. If anyone has ridden all the way to Mackenzie Bridge, I'd like
to know about that section too. Does the Santiam Hwy have a bike lane?
Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Kim,

224 is fine. The road through to Detroit is often closed due to snow.
