The official word from Thule and Yakima seems to be that class 1 hitches should only use 2 bike racks. Yet the max tongue weight for a class 1 hitch is 200 lbs. Given that the 4 bikes I'd be carrying are well under 100 lbs and the rack itself is about 40 lbs, that's under the 200 lbs max. Even with the increased leverage of longer rack arms, I'm wondering if a 4 bike rack would be that risky on a class one hitch. Or are the manufacturers overcompensating for those folks who want to transport 35 year old 5-speed Schwinn Collegiates?
Anyone have any helpful insights or experiences to share?
