I'm thinking about riding to the beach tomorrow morning.
Last time I went, I rode along 26. I remember there being
a lot of traffic and not a whole lot of shoulder.
Anyone know a route less traveled?

I grew up in ptown, and I now live in Astoria. My recommendation is:
hwy 30 to Scappose (20 miles)
@ the far end(west) of Scapoose, take a left on Scapoose/vernonia road to
the junction of S/v r and 47/202(a fine 20m)
47/202 all the way through Birkenfeld etc. to Fish hawk road in Jewell (the
finest 35 miles or so)
Left on Fish hawk to 26 (9 miles)
R on 26 to Seaside from the jewel mist exit where you end up(20 miles?)
including the hilly Saddle mountain area
You could go from portland out west union or skyline to get to 47/202 via
Vernonia as alternatives to scapoose, (this route has some very nice
sections of off hwy bike path near Vernonia.
and you could take 202 all the way past Olney near Astoria and take lewis
and clark road and old 101 to Seaside adding 20m,
be aware that past Jewel the final 25 miles of 202 has rough pavement in
places- but low traffic and very nice
Hwy 30 would include more extra miles and no less traffic, but you can leave
the highway from about 28 miles out of Astoria at the Brownsmead exit and
wind through Knappa and Svensen just off hwy 30 before being forced back on
near Astoria.

as for more shoulder, well, at least there's less traffic!
