The biggest gear you can push or the smallest gear you can't run faster than you can ride uphill. SS gearing is generally rider specific not course specific anyway...

I used 34X18 with a 26" wheel last year and it seemed perfect. I have used higher and it was a bummer. If you are a wagon wheel type, I will let you do the math to find the equivalent.
