For a good general discussion of knee injuries with respect to their
biomechanics in cycling, check out Andy Pruitt's article printed in
_Medical and Scientific Aspects of Cycling_ (1988) Burke and Newsom,
Eds. Also, there are a couple of great chapters in Burke's _Science
of Cycling_ (1986).
There are several other folks who have written about the subject...
buyt for my money Dr. Pruitt is probably the best. For someone in
the Northwest who's developing a pretty good reputation for
correcting biomechanically induced problems... Erik Moen in Seattle
is a good solid source. (Both Moen and Ed Burke were here this
January for the Cycling Conference)

does anyone have any insight into the relationship between calf, hamstring
and quad strength as it relates to knee pain?
I have read about (and am trying to balance) the difference in strength
between quads and vastus medialus causing knee pain. also that strong
hamstrings and weak quads can cause knee pain (can't really see this as very
likely in cycling although perhaps un-stretched hamstrings would produce
similar pain). finally I read a little thing about when the quads are more
developed than the calves that can cause pain too. I read this last part in
a guess as to why Ullrich is having knee pain. it was hinted that pushing
bigger gears leaves the calves underdeveloped?.why?
first: can anyone explain the calf / quad idea in more depth?
second: I wonder if anyone has a thorough grasp of how all of these elements
come together and how to balance them.
third: anyone have any luck with MSM chondrotin?
