the first gen 7900 had a plastic ratchet piece that broke very easy. This happened to my wifes right off the bat. Shimano has a 3yr warranty on shifters. Just take it to your closest shimano dealer and have it taken care of.

SRAM claims the shifters are rebuildable but when one breaks, they ask
you to send it back.

Hi Alex,

Realistically your only hope at this point is to try to get the part
covered under warranty. I'm not sure what the component warranty
period is, but it's certainly at least a year. Shimano STI shifters
are not service friendly-- I've tried! i even bought an expensive
"castle" tool to aid in the partial disassembly (only to have the
fragile teeth break-- curses!) Even so, this only removes the lever/
shift assembly from the hinge/bar mount.

I've read about folks that claim to have fully disassembled STI
levers but I've read even more accounts of springs and other tiny
bits shooting all over the place and levers that just won't go back
together.

It's a sad state of affairs.

This is precisely why I switched to bar-end shifters (and knee-high
tube sox).

SRAM levers, on the other hand, are fully serviceable. (While I
would have loved to switch to these, integrated levers of any brand
seem to be fiendishly expensive and quite out of my financial reach.)

Good luck and get your bad self to a bike shop!
