As far as legitimizing the ride I believe the endorsement by Congressmen Earl Blumenauer has added significantly to the cause.
The Portland police are fully on board with RoS. I've been told by officer Robert Pickett that he and another uniformed officer will attend the ride by bike. The department was asked to help on the ride by bike but with limited resources and only 4 paid cycling officers it was best to file for permits to "follow rules of the road" as even by motorcycle the force is stretched. By filing for permits in this manner it is up to the police to choose to cork for the ride. They are welcome to do so and that may still end up being the case.

It's too bad that the Portland Police aren't on board with this event this year. I believe that their presence helped to legitimize the message.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Ride of Silence this Wednesday!
Check the Ride of Silence web site for the closest ride near you. Wheels roll at 7PM.
http://www.rideofsilence.org/main.php
Wednesday's Portland Ride is starting at Holladay Park Lloyd Center. Meeting at 6:30 for a mild 5 miles around the heart of Portland. This is a silent ride to memorialize those lost while sharing roadways. We will follow "the rules of the road" without official police escort. This is not a protest ride, just a ride to create awareness of road sharing issues. If you are not familiar with the ride please check out the national web site above.
I hope to see you there.
