I grew up in Auburn (where I took the pics I posted earlier) and I never had a fender on any if my bikes. Ah, to be young and stupid again instead of not as young and not as stupid anymore...........

Re: Fenders in California... I lived for a few years in Bakersfield. Winters were pretty rainy. I commuted by bike to work and I think I was the OLNY person in Bakersfield to do so (it was very much an oil town as there were pumps everywhere-- in the middle of mall parking lots, etc.)
I remember dropping by a bike shop and trying to buy some fenders:
Me: "Where are your fenders? You guys have any fenders?"
Bike shop guy: "No we don't. What do you need those for, anyway?"
Really-- that is actually what the guy said. And he was being serious.
