Shimano SLX cassette vs. Chris King Hubs

I don't have experience with SLX and Chris King per say, but I did recently build up some fancy new wheels (with DT Swiss 240 hubs) and I was planning on putting my old cassette from my old wheels (DT Onyx) on them since it was in pretty good shape still. The shop warned me that the old cassette (it was a lower end SRAM cassette) I had might/could tear apart the alloy in the 240 hub splines. (apparently they use lighter weight and therefore less heavy duty materials to keep the weight down). The higher end cassettes use similar light weight materials and are thus compatible. In the end I bought a higher end cassette.

On my other bike, I know my CK hubs are pretty durable, but I imagine they also use light weight alloy/stainless steel to keep the weight down. I'd recommend reaching out to their customer service for advice.

So I'm setting up my mtn bike 1x9 (w/ 26" wheels) and wanted to guarantee that I would be able to climb just about anything...so, I bought one of the SLX 12-36 cassettes (CS-HG61 bh). I know it was designed for 29ers in mind.

The thing comes chalk full of warnings about the "extra load" putting undue stress on any hubs other than Shimano's FH-M629/M529 hubs. Anyone have any "experience" with this? Will my Chris King hubs survive? :)

Thanks!

I think this may be related to the newer XT and XTR hubs with 36 engagement points.
They haven't been holding up so well last I read.

You should be fine using an SLX cassette, just dont using anything cheaper!  The SLX, XT and XTR cassettes have the hollow spider carrier on the back, where a Deore or old/new lower end cassette carrier have a plastic and alloy spider, this will mangle your alloy or stainless freehub body.  Trust me mine looks pretty ugly, but is still rideable!  And I would not expect Chris King to warranty it! Use lots of grease and make sure you get that lockring tight and you will be fine.

Will,
I am not an engineer for sure, but two more teeth (compared to a 34) I would believe will NOT harm you CK hub. You could always ask CK. I would think Shimano would want to be selling you that hub along with the cassette!!!

I'm not sure the stresses would be much different from running a smaller ring up front, or 180-190 length cranks?
The only thing I can imagine would be an additional lever action against the cassette body's bearings from the taller cogs when the chain line isn't perpendicular to the axle.

I think historically most high-end after-market hub bearings outlast shimano cassette body bearings, but I may be wrong. I have seen a couple of clydesdales tear shimano XT rear hubs up.

Your king hubs have a warranty, correct? Do they warn against the cassette? If your dérailleur can handle it I'd do it knowing you. Seriously, are you that much of a torque-monster? I doubt it. Do it.
