This Portland circuit race has been promoted since 1952!! My first was 1972, where, as a green "Class C" I took a third place. There was something about that finish that made me fall onto the grass, gasping for air! I lay there on either my back or stomach, can't really remember, and my more experienced friend, John Lungren, expertly advised me that I needed to change for more effective recovery...
Back then, it wasn't called The Phil Hohnstein Memorial Classic, as Phil was actively running his shop on NE Broadway. He was outgoingly supportive of racing, and it wasn't unusual at all for him to take a bunch of riders out for ice cream after an event. I think there were some very good deals given by him to deserving young riders, as well as lots of race prizes coming from his shop. I think he lived with his sisters, never having married?
Always a tough race, it was especially so for Russell Morton in about '80, when his tires picked up at least three tacks someone had "mislaid" on the course...
Then I guess Scot Oja, in a 'behind the saddle' descent style, got his shorts snagged on the saddle, and couldn't get out of that position in the hard curve at the bottom...
Just before my time, the national road race was held on Tabor. Can anyone out there elaborate on the exact course they used? I believe it was a bit different than what we are used to...
In helping Team Rose City promote the race, I talked Greg Higgins in donating a few certificates for dining at his restaurant. Even if you don't win one of these, get down there sometime for some of the best food on the planet! (Speaking of food, anyone notice "Campagnolo" bread at Grand Central Bakery on Hawthorne? Someone over there is into cycling...!)
