Pinch Flats

I will echo earlier posts about tire size. If he isn't racing, tell him to
pickup some 25-30 wide tires depending on how big he wants and what will
fit. Many steel roadbikes will take a 25 or 28.
I weigh in at a light 270lbs and ride through crappy terrain and potholes
regularly (and jump curbs)
I've had about one pinch flat in my riding life (excluding 'cross)

My advice:
Look at Vittoria Randonneur, Schwalbe Marathon Plus, Panaracer
(whatevertheyare)
Run high PSI

All else fails, cough up some $$$ and buy some tubular-clinchers or a nice
tubeless setup.

Other suggestions:
1. Avoid super light tubes
2. Make sure tube is large enough. Running 23-25 tubes in a 28 tire
streches too thin
3. Get a pressure gauge
4. Make sure bead is seated well on rim
5. Use good rim tape (like velox), and make sure it covers holes.
Many wheels come with cheap plastic that slips and allows tube
to enter spoke hole.

Has anyone stated the obvious of not hitting the holes:)

If he's a new road rider, there's also a pretty good chance he's not running
enough pressure in his tires. Especially at that weight, the tires should be
running pretty close to their max to avoid pinching. Might be that simple,
although the other suggestions are also good.

Wider tires like 28s at high pressure will eliminate pinch flats, or
if that doesn't fit in the bike, touring style tires with stiff
sidewalls like the marathon.

NoTubes.com road Tubeless kit... Works on virtually any rim--never pinch or puncture (small) again. Also low pressure equals better traction and ride. I have this system in 5 different sets of clinchers with never a flat or problem in 4 years. Good luck!

Have a friend who is hitting a lot of potholes back in Ohio and has
asked me if there is a tire/tube combination that is any better than
what ever came with his new $1500 bike. Being a 500M TT specialist I
felt unqualified suggesting anything for a 200 pound new rider who is
really enjoying getting started but really frustrated by bad roads.
Any ideas are welcome.
