After reading Scott's note I thought that it might be time again to remind

riders that OBRA arranges for a first aid responder at most events. In the

unlikely event that you need medical treatment if you report to an official

we usually have someone there that can clean you up and/or evaluate the

injury. There is also a good write up on the web page about how to care for

injuries especially road rash.

This is also a good time to remind you that if you race bikes you fall off

of bikes and you SHOULD have some kind of medical insurance. There is a

very indirect coverage in the event you do not have insurance but it will

not pay the bills outright for you. I have attached the text of a letter

that we send to riders looking for insurance coverage.

OBRA is not an insurance company and does not directly pay member's medical

bills regardless of the circumstances of their injury. OBRA purchases

liability insurance which is made available to bicycle race organizers.

This insurance has a medical rider, similar to a homeowner or business

policy that provides a limited amount of coverage for injuries that are

sustained while competing in events covered by the OBRA insurance. The

coverage is secondary coverage. This means that all other available sources

of insurance must have been fully utilized before this coverage can be

accessed. There is a deductible and a limit cap that applies to this

medical coverage.

In general, it will be necessary for the OBRA member to pay the medical

bills and then apply for reimbursement of these expenses. This is done by

completing the enclosed claim form and submitting this, along with a copy of

the medical bills and a benefit statement from the primary health care

coverage (if any). This should be submitted to:

I would first of all like to say great job Team Rose City on putting on a

great race. I Would like to thank the EMT you guys had there for fixing me

up for my hospital ride, which I would like to report is just a case of road

rash and deep tissue/muscle bruising to my shoulder, but no broken bones as

he had thought. So I won't be racing again till cascade classic but at

least I'm not out for a few months. I guess it is good to take sometime off

the bike every once in a while. Thanks again and I look forward to next

years race.
