any points race is a race with points for various sprints, the person at the end of the race with the most points wins.
on the velodrome this is a common type race.
At PIR there are sprint laps during the race for points, and those are added to the finishing points to form a total amount of points for each rider.
As I read the email, sprints during the race are worth points and the final sprint points are worth double the points of mid-race points.
so in summary:
for rule readers it is, of course, obra rule 17.3.10, on page 66 of the online rules. (but rule readers already knew this) (Kenji even has some iphone app of it I am sure!)
for math geeks, person with most points wins (n+1, where n= 2nd place)
for hammers, win all hot spots and final sprint, they say "that was hard" (total points 25) (3 hot @ 5each + 10 for final)
for sneaky riders, win one hot spot (5 points) , take 2nd in two others (3+3) and place 3rd in final (4 pts), but somehow win race to surprise of everyone but yourself. (total points 15) (contrast with rider who wins final, but no other points= 10 points)
for mid pack folks, be careful, some sprinters go fast then slam back into the field.
for non-sprinters, go ride off the front and make the sprinters panic.
for all, enjoy!
and yes, I was on math team in high school.

For those of us that don't live in portland and don't understand "like PIR" would you care to elaborate on how the points will work.
Thanks,
Scott
