As Brian List has pointed out, road and track categories do not have an
element of self selection like CCX and MTB. ALL new track riders start as
Cat 5 under OBRA rules, regardless of road or other discipline category. No
offense to Ryan Weaver, who is a great guy (Where you been? We’ve been
missing you), but we have had riders a whole lot faster and higher road
category than Ryan and started track them as Cat 5s. The few times we have
deviated from this policy we have had problems. Actually the system pretty
much depends on there being a stream of new higher category road riders to
push the pace and string out the lower category fields making them safer for
everyone. Most good road riders will progress quickly through the
categories. We tell them when they are qualified. Track is very much
different from road however and there have been some quite notable cases of
strong road riders who could never figure out the track deal or move out of
the lower categories.

year. He might as well as stolen fourth graders lunch money. see you next

deviated from this policy we have had problems.

My wife is a nurse, you do the math.
The beginners race is also for people who have never raced the STXC. Ryan
Weaver with the arm's and legs of a T-rex started in cat 4 on track last
year. He might as well as stolen fourth graders lunch money. see you next
week...

I'm always a little surprised whenever I see team kits and expensive bikes
in the beginner class.

I know some folks ride the beginner race as a "pre-ride" or warm-up but it
seems a little unfair to the true beginners to have to deal with far more
experienced and aggressive racers.
