Skeeters do not like the extreme temps (hot or cold) and they really do not
function well in areas where you get a good breeze or wind. So if
camping...find a spot where you get some wind. Just my experience from a
few years of camping. But in general...in spring or summer I assume they
will be out there making a living....sucking blood or stealing bikes. I
guess a good time to kill them is after they suck your blood because they
tend to find a surface to rest to secrete all the excess fluid. They are
pretty lethargic then.... but, of course it is too late regarding the taking
of your genetic material.... just time for revenge...or last supper
mentality. I do understand if you get enough mosquito bites all over your
body, it mimics the dimple effect so good for aerodynamics...thus could be
an advantage in time trialing.

My friend was at Waldo last weekend and said....

"Well, I thought they were bad, but the rest of the group was talking about how light the bugs were this year. I guess Waldo can be a mosquito fest in July? Anyhow, they are apparently 'not bad,' although there were definitely some hanging around."

I'm with Hugh, though. I'd be skeptical. Good luck!

I was in the Stewart Range/Enchantments Lakes last week. Mosquitoes were ferocious at 4,500-5,800'. Relentless. Worst I've experienced in years. No bugs above 6,000' in the snow-zone, however. But that won't help you if you are planning an MTB trip.

Every NW climbing and hiking post I've seen lately says the same thing: It's a bad bug year.

With all the wet weather in the spring, I can guarantee the skeeters will be thick everywhere this summer. The trick is not to stop riding.

Since the skeeter subject came up, has anyone been up in the Idaho Sawtooths and have any corresponding snow/bug reports?

The Skeeters are real bad everywhere this year.

I heard a rumor that a rouge gang of Skeeters ambushed a group of free
riders near Waldo last month. When they had there fill of the free riders
they stole there mt bikes and began riding the trails around Willamette
Pass. I think they are responsible for a recent crime wave involving Randy
Drellings collection of antique Cannondale's. If you go, be afraid. Be
VERY Afraid!
