When it comes to Cross Crusade and natural barriers remember the old R&B song lyrics:

"Ain't no mountain high
Ain't no valley low
Ain't no river wide enough..."

Geez Mike, that is not nearly as much fun as a Big Dirt Volcano.

the newest barrier in cyclocross racing the Mike Murray reality check.

this barrier is famous for being uncrossable by those not based in reality by
those who seek fact and truth.

but a piece of me liked the volcano

There is nothing being built there. The Dairy was approached by a company
that is doing a sewer project which includes a large amount of fill dirt
that needed to be removed. The company offered to use this fill to level
the area north of the velodrome at no charge to the Dairy. This company
provided all the engineering and permits for this process. The area, which
previously had a 7% slope is being modified to have a 1% slope. This will
leave a much more useable area in that location that we can utilize for
parking, camping for events, etc. This should not create adverse drainage
effects on the surrounding areas. I expect that it should eventually be
usable for cross racing, although I do not know what the time table is for
completion of the project.

I'm sure this has already been discussed, but...

At the track a couple of weeks ago I noticed a huge amount of earth piled up
where the Cross Crusade course used to be (Northwest portion of the
property).

Does anyone know what is being built, and if it will affect/limit cross
racing this fall?

Thx,
Glen

If I was a property owner on the west or north side and Alpenrose was
planning on leveling to sidewalk of north end of velodrome.....out close to
property line.........I would be concerned with regard to how that would
impact my home, yard etc. Not an engineer, but if one day you have a 6'
cyclone fence and gentle upslope as your back property line, then the next
there is a 20' wall of earth just outside the fence, it would be safe to say
a big potential change may be taking place in your environment. This does
not even include Tom's Volcano and Human sacrifice section and all that
could do to either degrade the neighborhood or possibly create jobs in the
tourism industry as others use the volcano for sacrifices. Actually the
neighborhood might just change (that is inevitable we all know) into a
resort community. Brian. If this happens your property value might be
going up and there might finally be the support for a "covered velodrome" in
western Oregon. NO NEVER! The power of dirt!

That's not what I heard!

There is a rumor going around. Apparently the Crusaders are going to build a
monster Volcano Dirt Jump for the Crusade. It will have a trail cut into the
side of it that circles around the giant dirt volcano as it climbs. Then
just when you get to the top a near vertical descent down the side, over a
30 foot chasm and a landing zone that uses the north Turns of the Velodrome
as transition. As an added feature, During the course of the day The
Crusaders will sacrifice competing Race promoters, Racers on Mt Bikes and
Beginners with Carbon Cross bikes, by tossing them into the Crater of the
Dirt Volcano.

Of Course none of this has been verified, I just made it all up.....I Better
get back to work.

This is fill dirt from the Multnomah sewer project. If I understand
correctly it will be used to level the North area. I don't know when it will
be done or how the final product will look. I don't know if Brad has talked
with them, but he will have to speak to the "cross"-ability of the changes.
