Junior Ominum at the Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge
21 July 2002
The Junior Ominum was so popular that it may become a regular part of the
AVC. This was a great chance for the juniors to race in front of a huge
crowd. Anyone who missed seeing the juniors race can come most Fridays and
watch these youngsters race. Racing in the Junior A group were BBC racers
Taylor Kneuven (17) and Keith Beckman (14). Maliachi Bird (14) was
representing B.I.K.E. Team Oregon had a strong showing with Jon Long (17),
Ricky Bossen (15), Josh Woolcock (15) and Kenny Bossen (13).
The Junior B consisted of all young Team Oregon racers. Rachelle Hobson
(13), Kayla Woolcock (12), Madison Chilenski (11), Jacob Chilenski (11) and
Ellie Bossen (11).
First race up was a 6 lap Scratch Race for Junior A.
The older boys quickly put some distance on the younger ones.

Next was a 4 lap Scratch Race for Junior B.
The twins were quick to pull ahead of the girls and had a tight sprint for
first and second position with Rachelle close behind them.

3) Rachelle Hobson
4) Kayla Woolcock
5) Ellie Bossen
Next was an 8 lap Tempo for the A?s.
Jon quickly pulled ahead and took the first 2 points followed by Josh for 1
point. Then it was Taylor?s turn to take 2 points followed by Ricky grabbing
1 point. The next three laps Jon snatched 2 points each time and Taylor 1
point. Unfortunately with 2 laps to go Ricky moved to avoid another racer
but he and Taylor managed to cross wheels coming into the final corner and
Taylor went down.
Jon continued to take 2 points each lap and Maliachi pulled up to grab 1
point each of the last two laps.
Tempo Junior A
1) Jon 12 points
2) Maliachi 2 points
3) Ricky 1 point
4) Josh 1 point
5) Keith

DNF Taylor 5 points
Next was a 4 lap Tempo for the Junior B?s
Turns out they should have raced an odd number of laps. The very evenly
matched twins, Madison and Jacob, quickly pulled away from the girls and
took turns grabbing first and second points. The way to break the tie was to
compare number of firsts and number of seconds-- which was the same. That
left who was first across the line on the last lap. That was Jacob so he was
placed first and Madison was second.

5) Ellie
To try to even things out the last race was a Handicapped race for each
group.
The Junior A younger racers were not able to hold off the older faster
racers. Taylor had recovered from the earlier crash and was able to race.

In the Junior B race Rachelle grabbed her chance and pulled ahead of both
Kayla and Ellie. Madison and Jacob were not able to overcome their handicap
but sprinted hard for their finish.
