Is this guy for real?

It's really a subsidy question. Here are two good sources: one is a BTA

article at: http://www.bta4bikes.org/info/archive1/cyc-1993/cltr0593.html#1

And the other is at:

http://www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/advocacy/autocost.htm

It seems like someone on this list, quite a while back, posted some

information

that revealed that cyclists, or those that pay income and/or property taxes

at

least, actually pay more to use the road than motorists on a mile-per-mile

basis. That would be some good information to share with the guy who wrote

this article. Anybody happen to remember that, or the source it may have

come

from?

Just a reality check for car vs. bike - I just got a call from my Dad who

just watched a car drive past him and then my Mum (on their bikes) and then

turn suddenly in front of her. It knocked her down and dragged her for

several metres on her face. Fortunately she was helmeted but she still

managed to fracture a vertebrae in her low back.

The driver of the car was unharmed and the car barely scratched. "I just

didn't see them" was the comment afterwards.

Car 1 - cyclist zero.

My Mum assured me she would be back on the bike again ASAP - atta girl!

In http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/search/s_82631.html,

Mr Vassilaros must be out to provoke anger by at least this statement:

Are your secondary arteries clogged by clumps of Lance Armstrong-esque bicyclists sporting aerodynamic helmets, colorful skintight synthetics and baseball-size calf muscles?<

Wait a minute, guy! Mine are at least as big as softballs!

(Here's the OFFICIAL size lowdown:

Baseballs: 9 to 9 ?" Softballs: 11 7/8" to 12 1/8" )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm tempted to say Mr Vassilaros has a spoke-sized something, but that would be hitting beneath the belt, and besides, 'OFFICIAL size lowdowns' could get out of hand...

Once again, proof is given that opinions are just like assholes. Everybody

has one. This fellow's is just louder and larger then most others.

I think that someone at the Harvard Lampoon wrote a satirical anti-bike

editorial recently and a couple of dimmer journalists believed them and now

are jumping on the bandwagon :)

Other than that, my only other fear is that the world's gross IQ is a

constant yet the population continues to rise.

Oregon Cycling Magazine

Here's what I sent to Vassilaros and his editors:

Regarding Dimitri Vassilaros' July 23 article, "Bicycles and cars don't

mix":

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/search/s_82631.html

Even if this article is a joke, it is quite racist and in very poor taste.

"Bicycling is a practical way to commute, if you live in Beijing"?

Please... That is just the most overtly offensive phrase I found, plucked

from a wad of misinformation and intolerance. I cannot even begin to

understand the hostility and narrow-mindedness Vassilaros displays in his

piece. He has to actually slow down sometimes to accomodate others? How

inconvenient for him! This is ugly Americanism taken to an extreme, and if

it were not so scary, his oafish blustering would be ridiculously funny,

save for the cheap shot at the Chinese. Please consider a public apology to

those who may have been offended, among them those of us who ride bicycles

for a living and those of us who live car-free by choice and have found it

to be quite liberating. Not to mention the Chinese.

We've got to learn to talk to rednecks as if we were.

Look in the Oregonian's July 4 letters to the editor;

they published a little example of this that I sent

in.

Cheers
