As I understand it, the new UCI rules are any cross race taking place
in weather above 68F you are allowed feeding in the pit area as long
as you ride into it, grab food/water, and ride out.

This was allowed at Cross Vegas on Wednesday night since it was 80F at
9pm in Vegas but I didn't see anyone actually do it (though I did see
Wicks running a water bottle in a cage).

I have not done this, but know some who have....
Get yourself one of the low volume camelbacks (50 oz. I believe). They are
so small and low-profile you can put it UNDER your jersey and your numbers
show up well for officials (depending on amount of mud) and you do not need
to reach down and grab a bottle from the cage which is in your way when you
lift your bike. All you need to do is drink from the camelback mouthpiece.
Pretty efficient. You do not even need to fill the bladder all the way up.
Give that a try Tom. Keep an eye out for sales or if an REI member, get it
with your dividend.
just an idea.

Tom
You may ride with a bottle (and/or cambelback) and drink whenever you need
to. What you cannot do is take a handup anywhere but the pit.

Can someone clarify the hand-up rule? An official at Hood River made an
announcement before my race that made it sound like having a bottle in a
bottle cage on your bike is considered a hand-up. I know I am in the
minority here, but my body needs water even in a 45 minute race. Will I be
disqualified for bringing a water bottle or Gu with me during a cross race?

If wearing a camelback you need to be very careful about number placement.
At Hood River we were constantly moving numbers to make them visible.

There is no rule against consuming something you carry with you. The only
time that might be an issue is in track racing where there is no rule
prohibiting it but where an official might rule it to be dangerous and
disallow it.

There are specific rules regarding food and drink which are handed to you
that vary with the type of race. In addition, individual races may have
rules about hand ups. UCI/USAC used to prohibit hand ups in CCX but now they
allow them under specific circumstances. I don't recall that the OBRA rules
specifically prohibit hand ups in CCX.

It's also legit (right?) to leave yourself a filled bottle in the pit area. I left one for myself at Hood River by one of the pit posts, so I could just pull over, reach in, swig and go. Of course, it meant a stop and that isn't ideal, but I'm with you -- I can't go 45 mins without a drink either.

It's not a hand-up if you carry it with you. Any time there's a "no feed" rule it means no place to accept a feed or water from someone else. I've never seen any restrictions on what you can carry if you can eat a gu while racing; are there any?
