Ring the bell: Question about 'Cross lapping & manners

Maximillian Kirchoff

Thanks Josh.

To be clear to everybody who reads I'm really not trying to complain about
specific people. I couldn't tell 1st from 5th and won't even try to accuse
any particular guy racing. For all I know I had an aspiring 6th place
thinking he was all alone.

Max,

I apologize if it seemed i was communicating my desire to pass in a
less than cordial manner.    I wasn't trying to upset anyone. I was
just doing well and probably over-excited + tired towards the end of
the race.

When i passed someone yesterday, i tried to say either "excuse me" or
leader on your left, leader on your right (when in the lead), passing
left, passing right.

I've not been in that position before, so I reverted to what I say
when out riding, by letting folks know I was passing and on which
side.

I've already gotten a TON of responses.

Thanks for all the input.

Just to be clear, I'm not taking the situation very heavily/seriously I was
more curious about protocol.
I think I have a better idea and have been instinctually doing the right
thing - making space when I can and trying not to tangle up with faster
dudes.

Thanks again!

Maybe the dudes who are yelling are just panicked and full of
adrenaline and desperation. they are in the pain cave and not thinking
clearly. Being in the front of a race is absolutely terrifying. The
whole world is out to get you. I'm sure in real life they'd be nice and
buy you a beer (but only in Astoria!).

These races are so huge you are going to see the entire spectrum of
human emotion out there. I'd personally just take it in stride.

I'm not a leader in the C's but I do often pass the back of the Clyde pack.
I don't expect them to get out of the way, just hold a predictable line. I
also don't try to pass in tight, technical spots, and when I do pass I try
to let them know that I'm a C (primarily so they don't feel the urge to
chase me, that's the last thing I need).

I actually do appreciate the dudes who communicate that. I got this from
many others in the front of the Cs. What I got from the leaders was a little
different.

Maybe the riders coming-up from behind are being courteous by letting you know they are approaching!
Might it be a good idea in the future to require riders over-taking others to sound a horn, alarm or carry a bell
to ring before they pass ... more cowbell!!

I wanted to post an outright complaint but realized that for starters, I wasn't confident in my understanding of the rules or "manners" of the situation, and secondly that this is more of an informative forum than a complaint forum.

So here's my issue and my questions.

I race Clydes and I've been in small and large races. I expect a certain amount of chaos to the Crusades, it's the nature of big gatherings in general. Lots of people = lots of possibilities for problems, etc.
That said, after taking a nice spill, flatting, and running halfway across the course yesterday I found myself at the far back and had C leaders coming up on me. I had a few things yelled at me with those leading Cs coming through. "LEADER COMING THROUGH!!!!" "2ND COMING!!!" 3RD!!" "LEADERS! MAKE SPACE!" and other rather overly dramatic phrases about picking my line and making sure I don't ruin their placements. I believe to one of them I yelled, "I'M BLEEDING, TIRED, AND PITTED ONCE ALREADY....YOU FIND A WAY AROUND!" to which I got some nasty comments. Now I'm not trying to back-handed complain about this, stuff happens. People get excited and they don't want some Clyde crashing them out. I just want to know the facts of what I should/shouldn't be doing here and what the expectations are.

Is there some expectation for me to neutralize for these guys?
I'm still racing my race, and picking the lines I want that are in front of me. I'm not going to go bump these guys, but do I really need to do anything to modify my race if they come up on me?

P.S. Thanks to all the dudes who weren't yelling their heads off.
