It appears as though Rohloff chain tensioner is similar. or even just
a rear derailluer? aside but related... for my S.O. i run a single
chainring in the front (7 cogs in the back) and a non-shifting front
derailluer has been a cheap and effective way to keep the front chain
on.
Of course, the best and most simple way for a single speed is to use a
slotted rear (or bb eccentric). with normal single speed teeth (ie
long toothed), there is no need for any sort of guides or etc.. ie
just chainring chain cog.
but most people dont' bolt their wheels properly, the wheel slips a
tad and chain goes slack... see
http://bikeeng.blogspot.com/2008/05/bolting-bicycle-wheel.html
Unfortunately another issue is a that a large clamp force will
overcome the pre-load/locking of the locknut against the cone, and
bearings will go out of adjustment*... in this case, or of course in
the case of using a quick release, then unfortunately tugnuts are
necessary.
Sometimes enough loctite with just enough bolt clamping force to
prevent slip will solve the problems. I personally re-did the
cone/"locknut" into a one piece design.. (but that's a lot of work as
well... but then again my frame would probably crumple before the
wheel slipped and chain goes slack. )
*its interesting how the threaded bicycle axle in this case serves
several functions, the threads serve to adjust the bearings / hold
them in and together, and also as the tension member in a bolted joint
... cool stuff...
