Here's how I see it: A race is a race is a race! I just want to get in one
race a week, this time of year and we have so many to choose from, that it's
not a problem, so I actually choose the smaller venues and pre-reg to keep
my costs down. I would rather race against 35-50 other people than against
125 others anyway, its just more fun for me. Everyone is entitled to their
own opinion on this and I suspect some will decide with their check book,
thats what I do. It's still my Hobby and I only have so much $ to spend on
it.

Can't even believe you are complaining!

It is a standard supply and demand issue. Demand for weekend races is higher which allows the race organizer to charge more without decreasing participation as significantly.

Weekend races are also generally significantly more complex to organize and will require more resources, i.e. they will cost more to put on, not only in monetary cost but also in organizational energy so the race. My guess is that profit is higher (or at least losses are smaller) at weekday races.

Regardless, price of a product is mostly based on perceived value to the purchaser and not so much on the cost of bringing the product to market.

Can anyone help explain why there is such a difference in registration
costs if you decide to race on the weekend rather than during the
week. Is it more expensive to have a race on the weekend? It sure
seems like the amount of racers goes up on the weekend, which would
seem to cause the registration costs to go down. Just curious...

Supply and demand is an economic model of price
determination in a market. It concludes that in a competitive market, the unit
price for a particular good will vary until it settles at a point
where the quantity demanded by consumers (at current price) will
equal the quantity supplied by producers (at current price),
resulting in an economic equilibrium of price
and quantity.

The four basic laws of supply and demand are [1]

  1. If demand increases and supply remains unchanged then
    higher equilibrium price and quantity.

  2. If demand decreases and supply remains the same then lower
    equilibrium price and quantity.

  3. If supply increases and demand remains unchanged then
lower equilibrium price and higher quantity.

  4. If supply decreases and demand remains the same then
    higher price and lower quantity.

Every revolutionary idea seems to evoke three stages of reaction...
One, it's completely impossible.
Two, it's possible, but it's not worth doing.
Three, I said it was a good idea all along.
