Just a little fyi for mark,
since I know both you and sean, you can use your normal voice. Seans older than you.

Back in the day when I raced juniors and we had USCF gear restrictions, we would
just use the limit screws on our rear derailleurs to block out the smallest cog
(a 14 back in those days) to meet the requirement.
you young kids today, don't know what you're talking about, pick the gear you
want in the rear, and put the rear derailluer in that gear, then screw both the
high and low limits screws in (righty tighty) until the r. Der won't move any
more.
now for the front, you pick which chain ring you want and do same with limit
screws.
you now have a single speed bike with lots of extra parts to break off while
racing cross or what ever it is you kids today do with your time when you're up
to no good.
I'm going back to watching wheel of fortune.

it works, really. (not the old man voice)

I understood that you can do that. I heard that it was common for people to zip
tie their geared bike to make it ss but I am not very mechanically minded and so
don't know whether this really works.

A couple of people have asked me and I don't know the official answer.
"can you use your geared cross bike for SS races if you lock out your shifting?"
I've seen it in stxc. Certainly would be easier with SRAM since once you taped
the double-tap lever to the brake lever you couldn't shift either direction.
Would take a bit more work on other shifting systems. Certainly would allow you
to pick the gear ratio you wanted based on the course without having to swap
cogs.
Anyway...is there an official rule regarding SS cross races and what type of
systems are allowed or not allowed?
Thanks.
