2009 race numbers have begun shipping. Please allow up to a week to
receive them. If you need a race number to register for a race please
contact me as I have assigned numbers to almost all the memberships
that have been received (except for the ones that I have received in
the last few days).

Three important things:
We cannot guarantee that you will receive your number from last year
if you purchase an annual license now. There is a 10% chance that we
will be able to fulfill your request.
As a reminder-
Use your 2008 road numbers for the Vanport Kermesse on Sunday.
Barring any problems with the mail you should receive your numbers by
Saturday. You will not get yours on time if you submitted an
application today (online). If you do submit an application online
today, obtain a temp number at registration. David Hart will have a
list of 2008 members as of tomorrow at 6 PM. Do not register after
this time tomorrow (online)- purchase your annual membership at the
race.
To speed registration, please print your waiver and pre-fill it out-
neatly.

FYI:
Today we mailed over 800 membership packets.
A big thank you to Tom Rousculp, Veloshop and Tricia Satterlee,
Ironclad, both of the BTA! Candi and I wouldn't have been able to do

The OBRA data base is connected to race results.
Your OBRA number (THE ONE YOU PIN ON YOUR BODY!) is the important number.
If you wear last year's incorrect number someone else is listed for your results.
If your number cannot be read the officials can miss the next person or two following you.
For each person who wears or signs up under an incorrect number the officials must spend 3-7 minutes searching for the correct number and identity. If just 10 people show up and race under the incorrect number, 30 minutes to 70 minutes are spent figuring out the correct information.
Pleas sign up and wear correctly the correct number.

For various reasons, many people do not want two numbers if they are not
necessary. If something as simple as putting it in the flyer can be done,
why not do it. It did not seem like an unreasonable request as it does not
take any additional effort on the promoters part. I for one, in the
District TT (and any other races), would like to know what side the number
should be on because I do not intend to wear two numbers.

WRONG! Numbers and their placement are critical at all events. They are
least important at the velodrome where field sizes are small, no camera is
used and the officials can generally recognize all the riders. They are
most critical at stage races where the entire field needs to be placed.
Flat bunch finishes are obviously more difficult but even uphill finishes or
the single finishes at TTs are a bear if numbers are not visible. I
encourage all riders to spend a small amount of time watching the officials
compile results after a race. When you see them trying to pick the field as
it zings past the finish and then trying to identify the riders in the
grainy freeze frame of the video you start to realize what all the fuss is
about.

I have 10 kids racing. The first year it was a nightmare to pin all those numbers on before each race. I would have to figure out if they were wearing their long or short sleeved jerseys then pin all those numbers. 10 kids numbers X 8 pins is 80 pinnings This was very time consuming. And we race the track and road so I often had to move numbers several times per week.
The solution I came up with was to get them the same numbers this year. Now all of the kids have 4 numbers. The older two numbers are pinned onto their long sleeved warm jerseys. The two newr numbers are pinned onto their short sleeved jerseys. We just leave them on--they wash with no problem.
I used the really good pins that Candi buys that do not rust. I pinned the numbers in February. It took me about four hours to pin all of these numbers on. I found that if I pinned the numbers starting with the first pin up in the armpit I was able to make it fit in a good position for the officials. I also found that if I stuck the pin into the number then the jersey and back through the number it was harder to rip holes in their jerseys.

I don't know why folks are always so worried about which side to pin
numbers on. AFAIK, every OBRA registration comes with a pair of
stretchy numbers. If you're not sure, pin them on both sides, and be
done with it.
