Hi Everyone,
If you get bored with computer support or technical questions, this is the
time to delete this post.
I have a computer support question for all of the tech guys here. Here is
the situation:
I have a separate physical hard drive(500gb) on my computer (home built rig)
that has 465gb worth of music on it. Not all of this music is loaded into my
iTunes, but certain selections are. Last night I went to add some more music
to my iTunes from this library, but I found that 100gb worth of music
(folders/ files) cannot be seen by Windows Explorer when I go through My
Computer. However, when I open My Computer, the storage capacity shows that
the files are still there. Additionally, for some of the music that is now
"missing" but was downloaded into iTunes previously, the songs will still
play and if I select the properties of the file, they still go to the old
location. Lastly, if I use the "Show in Windows Explorer" option in iTunes,
I can locate the files and even ones I have not downloaded.
To sum up:
. My Computer shows data still exists under Total Size/ Free Space.
. Total storage capacity for the drive is 500gb. I am currently
showing 465gb for the "Total Size" for the drive, and 30gb free space under
My Computer. However, when I open the drive, the total contents of the
folders that are in there only total 336gb. Thus, I am missing 100gb of data
that I cannot "see".
. I can still play files that are potentially missing in iTunes.
. Under the "Get Info" for each song that is potentially "missing",
the file location still indicates the correct file location.
. Under the "Show in Windows Explorer" option in iTunes, I can open
the actual folder where the "missing" file resides and even access the other
files that are in that folder but were never downloaded into iTunes prior to
this incident.
. I ran a virus scan on the drive and even a second one on the
entire system and I came up clean. Windows and Norton are both up to date.
. I am running iTunes 10.
. When opening the specific folder that the missing information
resides in, Windows appears to "hang" for a moment before opening. As
opposed to opening instantaneously with every other folder.
. Everything from the letter "M" on is missing. They were not
deleted.
. If I try to "Add Folder to Library", or even "Add File to
Library", I cannot see the missing files.
While I have not accessed the folder to download music for a week or two, I
feel this only happened very recently as definitely is odd as iTunes is
still able to locate the files. Basically, If I can remember a particular
artist that was there, then I can force my way there through the "Show in
Windows Explorer" option, but this is not solving the problem.
I appreciate the help. Please reply off line with any tips, tricks,
suggestions, phone numbers to call, etc.
Thanks.
