Does he have any idea of the cost of putting on an event?   Absolutely not!

The expenses to put on road and mtn bike races far exceeds what most of you

imagine. Let's take a standard road event. With an attendance of 150 riders

for 5 categories

$1.40 per day per rider for Insurance $210

$1.00 per day per rider for OBRA Surcharge 150

Truck Rental 50

6 Officials with mileage and meals 480

Portapotties 200

Postage for Flyers 481

Paper for flyers 15

Printing 50

Pins 15

First Aid 75

Advertising in cycling mag 150

lunches for volunteers 150

Venue/Road use fees 150

Police 300

Total 2250

And you forgot a big one!

5 fields = 5 lead and 5 follow cars.....thats 10 cars paying out gas money

(at least) for well over 100 miles each (easily over 200 miles if you are

doing a race that is out in the "boonies"...to and from the race plus the

race mileage)

Tell your Cat IV newbie to go race in California or Arizona (or anywhere

else) and see how he/she likes the cost of race entry. Things are pretty

darn inexpensive here in Oregon.
