At road events they might have that amount in their front wheel alone.

Hah! Kids riding expensive bikes? You should see BMX races. My brain melted just a little when I saw 7 and 8 year-old kids riding bikes that cost in excess of $1000. :)

OK. I have spent quite a bit of $$ on bikes since I began racing. I have
also done a great deal to maintain and make what I have last as long as
possible. If things are maintained well they last longer...pure logic...if
they are constructed well and not damaged. I have had very good
results/luck with regard to making my equipment last. I have recently been
considering trying tubulars, but have more and more been moving toward NOT
making the purchase of said wheels and tires. I do not have a problem with
the wheel/hub purchase, but with the cost of the tire and the cost of
maintaining said tire when trouble arises. Flats with a clincher and
tube....cheap to repair. Burp or flat with tubeless....cheap to repair.
Flat with tubular....not so cheap to repair from what I can tell. Tires
wear out! Clinchers and Tubeless are a great deal less expensive to replace
than Tubular. I did not even mention the glue chapter of each novel titled
Tubular. So I am at one time still curious (not yellow....old obra members
might remember that one) about tubulars, but I could spend a grand easy
getting a set-up. I know several people who will read this have already
given me some very good advice and really would like to see me try this
set-up....but wow!!!! I would much rather have my wife supportive of my
racing than to say "How much?" regarding tires that I am going ride as hard
as possible. Tell me you can get a great set-up for the cost of a good set
of clinchers, then where I can get that set-up. A kid racing could start
with much less investment with clinchers. The whole carbon fiber thing is a
little strange to me. I mean bikes and parts are being made from various
materials and I do not think it matters that much as has been pointed out
regarding the fitness of the kids racing. I have beaten people riding
carbon bikes on my aluminum bike as a case in point.
rules. rules. rules.....always someone telling us what we should do right?
