Numbers at CCX??

Actually we can do some of that stuff with the current equipment we have.
We can zoom and enhance the picture by changing the brightness, contrast and
gamma. People should stop by an look at what we can and cannot do. We are
stuck with the pixel limit and light reflected back to the camera though.
Can't make up data that never made it to the camera.

Just enhance it, Mike. What's the problem?

Katie was spraying people while we did a run out after the finish and having WAY too much fun doing it. Our on the fly try to fix the mud covered number initially included trying to spray numbers as rider went by. We gave this up pretty quick when it didn't work. In fact, even with the rider standing still and using the portable power washer it was hard to get that stuff off. Sarah must have just been lucky and/or more fastidious so she didn't need as much cleaning.

To address Ron's suggestion about pull tabs a la mtb racing. Finish order for cross is just one piece of the puzzle. In contrast to most mtn bike races, cross racing will have people on different laps which causes most of the difficulty with results. The run out like we did yesterday for some fields can be useful but generally it is not needed. Now if we could get people to do it every lap ...

At our start, they said they would spray our numbers with water if
they were obscured by mud. I thought that was pretty clever!

I was looking forward to the head-start on my cleanup, but didn't get
sprayed and didn't notice anyone getting sprayed. Of course, maybe I
was oblivious - or maybe I just wasn't muddy enough to merit spraying
(hard to imagine).

It's pretty easy to scan the Cross Crusdae number and print out small
4" wide versions of the scan on an inkjet printer. I was going to run
shoulder numbers at PIR but it seemed like I was trying too hard
(especially given my absolute lock on 150th place in every Masters C
field)

The MFG races in Seattle use 1 shoulder number in addition to a back number. Seems like an additional spot would be good.

Judging from the pictures of myself and others, my arms were less muddy than my back.

Helmet numbers as well as shoulder numbers will be a good idea. The catch is that they will be smaller and therefore more difficult to read, especially with the camera. Unfortunately, unlike on the TV crime shows, video cameras do not have infinite pixel density so small things are harder to see. More numbers, more better.

Even better, here's a solution that is available with an RFID chip
built in!
