Biking and walking plan goes to Board for public hearing

Vancouver, WA – The county’s proposed Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan will be the topic of a public hearing before the Board of County Commissioners at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

The session will be in the sixth-floor hearing room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St., Vancouver.

The proposed plan outlines ways to improve conditions for safely riding bikes and walking for transportation and recreation during the next 20 years. It seeks to promote those activities through education, citizen participation and support from developers, employers and organizations, making the community healthier and more livable.

Among the goals of the proposed plan are to:

· Close gaps in existing biking and walking networks and corridors
· Provide safe biking and walking paths, sidewalks, lanes and trails that link to community centers, downtowns, schools, parks and neighborhood centers
· Install signs to better guide bikers and walkers and increase awareness of the paths and activities
· Integrate biking lanes and walking paths into new road construction
· Encourage grocery stores and farmers markets to locate along existing bike and pedestrian corridors
· Work with schools to encourage more students to bike or walk to class
· Complete high-priority projects within 20 years; complete other projects as funding becomes available
· Develop an east county scenic tour
· Develop recommended long- and short-term bicycle parking standards

If approved, the plan goals and objectives will become part of the county’s Comprehensive Plan the next time it is updated.
