$20 bucks is a small price to pay to get your ya ya's out and keep those competitive juices flowing... keep your lard ass off the couch and give you a reason to train... hanging with some great people who appreciate the thrill of racing two wheels like you did with your buddies growing up... blowing your lungs till your coughing up hairballs...and chasing down breaks, only to get off your bike and have your hamstring twitch like some Morse code message.
I don't know about you, but I am not prepared to do and/or organize setting up cones, driving a yellow small moving van, filling out paperwork, calling the guys who specialize dropping off those "oh so necessary" honey-buckets, viewing tape to see who finished in the top ten... and.. and.. and..
Participating in the racing community takes the recreational rider and pushes him/her to personal levels once thought unattainable. Can you really put a price on that?
There is no free lunch. It is about value. I suggest viewing the entry fee as an investment. If not, then it may be time to reevaluate one's personal motivation. I suppose there are a few in the local racing scene who race for the money.
But let's get real. If you want to race for money, prizes, lucky marbles or a cherished stamp collection for that matter; see what is costs for a personal coach, hundreds of hours of training, travel, the latest techno gadgets, and a flexible job that allows you to elevate your legs and take that power recovery nap after your 6 hour training rides.
Do your best and race your ass off to win? YES!
Race to pack your wallet and get your mugshot on the cover of Velo News? Well....it may be time to rekindle the passion for racing this two-wheeled mechanical marvel.
