Hey that's a good point, Kevin.
In college, I rowed on the crew team for four years. When you
beat another boat in a race, they give you the shirts off their
back (literally). So I've got tanks from several teams I competed
with over the years. Other events gave medals or ribbons to the
top three spots, and I still have a bunch of these floating around
to this day.
My point is it's nice to look back and have a momento of your
finest athletic achievements.

Subject: RE: [OBRA Chat] Cost of Racing, Masters Categories
My two cents:
Cost of racing - First let's assume I'm even in a
position of "winning" anything (dream on!). I'd be
over joyed to receive a medal or do-dad or what ever
that I could hang on my basement wall and remember for
years. Money has nothing to do with this sport; let's
face it, financially speaking it's a lousy investment,
probably even for the cat 1/2's who win. We do it
because we like it! Damn the costs! I'm happy to pay
my $20 just for the privilege to race. Just being able
to place in anything would be enough icing on the
cake! By the way Darell, you also hit the nail on the
head!
Masters categories - I love having the masters broken
down into categories. Racing the masters 4/5's is much
different then the open 4/5's for reasons already
stated. This sport is seems to be full of people like
me, who came to it late in life and have to work hard
just to stay in good enough shape to hang with a lot
of this crowd. It's great having a group like this to
race against, with out having to compete with some of
the young bucks who are probably just blowing through
the cat 4/5 races on their way to becoming a cat 2.
I'll never catch them.
Thanks to everyone who supports this sport and
organization. Cycling and racing have consumed a
fairly large part of my life over the past year or so,
much to the chagrin of my significant other. I
wouldn't be doing it if all the people involved didn't
make it such a positive experience.
