Removing rusty SPD cleats

I was successful by applying lots of lube (actually WD-40) as decribed earlier, then, after I slipped the hex wrench a couple of times I changed to a slightly larger hex wrench (English) then took a hammer and pounded the wrench into the head until it stuck. I was very surprised and relieved when I could then work it loose.

a sharp screw, knife or nail will also help clean out the head of the bolt
so wrench can be inserted fully.

... and failing the flat head conversion - you can use a screw extractor,
like the ones on this page:

I've used the Grabit Pro kit (available at Home Depot or Lowes) with great
success on some water bottle cage screws that rusted in place on an old
bike.

If the hex socket does get rounded, you can use a dremel tool with a cut off wheel to make a slot for a flat screwdriver.

Use some penetrating oil (get from hardware store) and put it on top
of the bolt head around the edges and on the other end of the bolt on
the inside of the shoe. If you take out the shoe insole you'll find
a flap of material covering up access to a steel backing plate the
SPD cleat screws into. Pop that open with a knife or screw driver,
and you can squirt some penetrating oil on the bolt threads there
too. let the oil sit a while before you try wrenching. A little
tapping with a hammer may help loosen the rust too. Cussin' at it
helps too :)
