I think more women might be interested in racing if they had more access to
group riding in general. Speaking from my own experience, it's really
intimidating to be an inexperienced rider in a group, say at PIR, when your
bike handling skills aren't well honed. You get shelled off the back, which
is no fun, and/or yelled at because you're not holding your line.
There is a womens group ride on Saturdays that leaves from River City Cycles
at 10:30 a.m., it is very casual and a lot of fun. We usually go 20+ miles
and are out for about 2 or so hours. It is giving me the confidence to want
to try a race. I would encourage any woman who is interested in riding with
a group to try the Saturday ride. I would also be interested in hearing of
other group rides, especially mid-week.
