Women riders only need to read

BRODN-@aol.com

2002-08-05

I think more women might be interested in racing if they had more access to

group riding in general. Speaking from my own experience, it's really

intimidating to be an inexperienced rider in a group, say at PIR, when your

bike handling skills aren't well honed. You get shelled off the back, which

is no fun, and/or yelled at because you're not holding your line.

There is a womens group ride on Saturdays that leaves from River City Cycles

at 10:30 a.m., it is very casual and a lot of fun. We usually go 20+ miles

and are out for about 2 or so hours.   It is giving me the confidence to want

to try a race. I would encourage any woman who is interested in riding with

a group to try the Saturday ride. I would also be interested in hearing of

other group rides, especially mid-week.

I'd like to add my plea to Candi's. We have exp'd increasingly small

fields with the women over the summer; it's much more fun with more of

   us participating.

Candi has worked so hard to push women's categories in racing in this

   state; let's respond.

I know there's a lot to race and many of us have children at home; I

don't know how many of you manage with work, children and training.

With PIR on Mondays, the crits this weekend and track during the week,

it is a lot to manage.

There was a real small turn out for the state road race championship and I

was really disappointed. But talking to the riders that were there is

obviously that the schedule is just very full and it is hard to pick and

choose which events to go to.

This weekend there are 3 crits. If the Friday night crit does not have a

good showing in the women's field it will probably be dropped. Saturday and

Sunday are old standbys but we really should show our support. There are no

more road events until the Eugene Celebration so I ask you to try and come

to these 3 events in strong numbers.

There is another road event before Euguene - the Camas

Weekend. It would be great to have a number of women

racers visit us on the north side of the Columbia. The

omnium will have street sprints on Friday, a hilly road

race on Saturday, and downtown crit on Sunday. This

year the women will race the full course, not just the

hillclimb. The road race is also the final event for

the Oregon Cup.
