This is the most common failure of these things, it usually finishes
them off. Some kind of waterproof tape is all I can think of, but I
can't think of any kind of waterproof tape really - maybe a string of
glueless patches?. Try to find them cheap on ebay, I got a couple for
$6 more than a few years ago, but you should be able to find
something.
