It'll work with 9spd Shimano. You just need a mtb rear derailleur.

I have a 10 speed compact setup with these parts:
'9-speed' Tiagra compact 50/34 crank on Ultegra outboard bearings.
'9-speed' LX (or XT?) rear derailleur, long cage.
10 speed Ultegra shifters
10 speed 11-36 cassette
10 speed chain.

Works well.  Climbs walls with the 25" low gear.

I am not sure that Shimano '10-speed' mtn bike derailleurs work with 10-speed road levers, but '9-speed' mtn bike derailleurs work with 10-speed road levers.

Anybody have any luck getting a 32 or 34 tooth mt. bike cassette to work with a compact crank? I've heard the mt and road  derailluers/shifters are not compatible when mixed.
Thanks, Casey

As mentioned works with 9sp shimano. Also works with SRAM 10speed and their
derailleurs as of at least this last year. I'm running Campy shifters to
Shimano MTB derailler via Travel Agent and it works perfectly.
