route from PDX to Bend

Rick,

Sure, or a rando bike.

That would definitely be a better bet than a pure road bike. Although I'd
wager that even a CX bike would not be very fun on FS 57 just prior to
Timothy Lk. It's that bad (or at least it was when I last rode it).

No doubt there are riders with a bigger codpiece than I've got out there in
OBRA-land. Give it a go and report back!

It's too bad no one makes a road bike that's built a little more durable
for rides like that. Ideally the frame would be more compliant and able
to fit larger tires to improve traction and comfort. It would also come
standard with lower gears so one could climb steeper and also at a pace
that allows for taking in the beautiful scenery. More powerful brakes
that had extra clearance for mud would be great. A bonus would be if the
cables were routed such that it was easy to carry the bike past snow
patches, stream crossings or other obstacles. Maybe even a provision to
mount fenders the keep the grime off for those all day mountain adventures.

Oh wait - they do make such a thing you say? You say it's called a
Cyclocross bike. Awesome!
Guess you could say they're good for more than 45 minute rides from
October to December...

Jon,

I've ridden 224 to Timothy Lake. (Diverging from 224 to FS 57). It starts
to get hilly just prior Ripplebrook GS, but no killer hills that I recall.
Ripplebrook has a few items for sale (bottle water, some soft drinks and as
I recall a few food items like candy bars/Clif Bars). The only other
services out there are 15 or so miles prior to Ripplebrook GS at Promontory
Park boat launch area. If you're planning on doing this soon, I'd call both
to see if they're even open and when.

The road narrows and doesn't have much of a shoulder past Ripplebrook.
Times I've ridden it traffic has not been too heavy and people were
generally accommodating of a cyclist. I have run into some interesting
characters up that way. Deliverance, banjo, interesting...

I don't think you'll find much in the way of water from Ripplebrook up to
the vicinity of Breitenbush HS as the road diverges up from streams/lakes
for a while.

It's a gorgeous area. Be advised that some of the gravel roads are almost
impassable by road bike (e.g. the last few miles of FS 57 prior to Timothy).
They look good on the map but in some places "gravel" means fist-sized or
bigger jagged rock road cover that's pretty tough on 23mm or less tires.
Worth a call to a Mt Hood guard station to ask about the route first.

Best,
Jeff

I have two different general areas of interest:

2. another possible way would be riding out to Zig-Zag to Still Creek road,
a dirt road that goes behind Ski-Bowl and comes out on 35. I would prefer to
not ride down 26 all the way to Bend, at least not on the high-traffic parts

Totally. I would bring TWO spare tubes. Maybe even an extra vest to
wear, and a sandwich.

Roger the being prepared.

I drove to Bend last year in early April via Rt 22 (through Detroit), and spent an hour and a half with chains on since there was about a foot of snow.

Check conditions.

I would "really be prepared" if any of you are planning on going over the cascade range at this time of year.

I'm interested too. Let me know if you've found any good backroad routes. (Gravel is okay.. errr gravel is great!)

I've heard the 224 to Detroit is a slow climb all the way and the pass right before Detroit is impassable this time of year.

Here are a few routes I've looked at but not ridden:

Guys, I think most of the road from Ripplebrook to Timothy is intact.
The main road washed out a number of years ago, but I believe rd 57
still passable (recon this one). From Timothy Lake/Clear Lake, take
Hwy 26 to Hwy 216 (Wapinitia Hwy). At Wapinitia, you can either go
straight to Maupin and then south on HWY197, or you can turn South at
Wapinitia and go to Warm Springs and back on HWY 26 for a little ways.
Maybe 5K from where 26 crosses the Deschutes, take a right on to Elk
Creek Drive (I don't remember what the sign says at that end) and then
you're on farm roads through Metolius and Culver. About the only time
you'll have to deal with Hwy 97 traffic is right at Crooked River.

I would contact the Ripplebrook Ranger station up there and ask them
which of the campgrounds along that route have water.
Once you have crested, you have a fairly fast downhill (60-90 minutes)
to some of the campgrounds along the stream (the Brightenbush stream)
that takes you down to Detroit. Then, there's good water and food.
The route is hwy 224 to FR-46 (it's basically the same road) all the way
down to Detroit.

It's been at least three years since I've done that though so my memory
isn't may be failing me, hehe.
There is no water coming over the top though, that's for sure.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] route from PDX to Bend

I'm looking for a good biking route from Portland to Bend. I've ridden from PDX to Sublimity and over Santiam Pass to Sisters, but I'm wondering about a more backroads route.
I have two different general areas of interest:

1. riding out of Estacada on 224 to Detroit. Has anyone ridden/driven on this road at least halfway through? Is it really hilly? Any services along the way?

2. another possible way would be riding out to Zig-Zag to Still Creek road, a dirt road that goes behind Ski-Bowl and comes out on 35. I would prefer to not ride down 26 all the way to Bend, at least not on the high-traffic parts closer towards Madras.
There are a lot of Forest roads running along 26 that could be nice, but also a little hard to follow. One in particular is off Rt. 216 heading south through the Warm Springs Reservation.

If anyone has any experience riding in any of these areas or any other applicable ones, I would love to hear about it.
Thanks- Jon
