David,

We usually park about 10 to 15 mile from the base of the climb.  We start out at about 10am or 11am depending on the scheduled time in the paper of the caravan.  You need to be where you want to be on the mountain 2 hours before the caravan arrives which is about two yours before the riders get there or you will be walking your bike or be stuck half way up the mountain.  We generally hang out at 2k to go since it is not as crazy.  So you ride to the top and if you are lucky there is a food and beverage stand at the top.  Then you ride back down to your spot.  As soon as the sweep wagon passes for the last rider you jump on your bike and head down before all the cars start trying to get on the road.  When you arrive at the bottom traffic will be grid locked.  You ride down the center of road on the yellow line between the cars and duck in when ever a semi or mobile home comes the other direction.

I have never taken a car and camp but I have seen cars still driving down Alpe d'huez at 11:00PM at night bumper to bumper after the race.

I'm looking for advice from anyone who has recently visited a mountain stage at the Tour on how best to arrange logistics to and from the stage finish. I'd appreciate input from anyone willing to share their experience(s).

Thanks,
David Jackson

I would also go on www.weightweenies.com. Go to the cycle chat part and post your question. There are people on there from all over the world. They may have some ideas for you. I got some great ideas for our hawaii trip.

Widening the web further Richard"Pez" Pestas @ pezcyclingnews.com is an awesome resource and always cordially answers emails. Also Chris at podiumcafe.com and his Euro crew are massively connected and entertaining. Pez=Vanc. B.C.'ish, Chris=Seattle kinda. Hope this helps. Can barely type. Jealous.
